HONOLULU – Island Distillers has started manufacturing thousands of gallons of HAPA brand hand sanitizers for consumers and businesses in Hawai‘i, with discounts for nonprofit organizations. The HAPA hand sanitizers are available today at Foodland, Whole Foods and City Mill statewide.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using a hand sanitizer that has a minimum 60 percent alcohol content. Island Distillers’ HAPA hand sanitizer contains 80 percent alcohol content, making it more effective at dissolving the lipid and protein envelope that surrounds the COVID-19 coronavirus.
The Governor’s emergency proclamation now in effect requires all essential businesses and operations to make hand sanitizer and sanitizing products readily available for employees and customers. But what happens when the whole world is scrambling for disinfectant? Island Distillers fills the need with a product from Hawai‘i, for Hawai‘i.
“Frontline responders and essential workers are not the only people who need to stay safe. Uncle and aunty next door can use hand sanitizer too,” said Dave Flintstone, owner of Island Distillers. He first recognized the need when store shelves were empty of hand sanitizers, and online retailers raised prices of the product as the demand increased. “We wanted to do our part.”
The HAPA hand sanitizer also comes in various sizes as consumers and businesses have different needs. They are available at Island Distillers at $65 for one gallon (128 ounces); $16.50 for 32 ounces; $9 for 17 ounces; and $6 for 8 ounces, with no limit on the number of purchases that consumers or businesses can buy. Nonprofits ordering hand sanitizers from Island Distillers are eligible for a 50 percent discount off the regular price. Due to its high alcohol content the product is only available at partner retailers or at the distillery location in Hawai‘i Kai, open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Island Distillers started with the idea that excellent spirits could be made right here in Hawai‘i. The abundant natural resources and perfect climate create an environment for a unique blend. O‘ahu’s oldest distillery offers a line of HAPA vodka and an indigenous alcoholic spirit called ʻōkolehao. Visit our website at islanddistillers.com.
