Nashville Youth Mark International Mandela Day with Art, Education, and a Celebration of Human Rights

Nashville, Tennessee, Jul 24, 2026, ZEX PR WIRE — More than a dozen young people gathered in Nashville on Sunday, July 19, to take part in a Mandela Day Youth Art Workshop hosted by Tennessee United for Human Rights (TnUHR). The event, held in observance of International Mandela Day, brought youth together for an afternoon of learning, discussion, and hands-on creativity — resulting in a collection of original artwork now on display at tnuhr.org/mandela-day-2026.

The workshop opened with a screening of The Story of Human Rights, a documentary that traces the origins of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the ongoing global effort to protect the freedoms and dignity of every person. Youth also viewed a series of Public Service Announcements produced by Youth for Human Rights International, bringing the 30 articles of the Declaration to life through vivid, accessible storytelling designed specifically for young audiences.

From there, the group dove into an interactive discussion about Nelson Mandela — his life, his convictions, and the legacy he left behind. Through a trivia format that kept the energy lively and the curiosity high, participants explored who Mandela was as a young man, what drove him to stand up against apartheid, what those 27 years behind bars meant for a movement, and how his presidency helped shape a new vision of what justice and reconciliation could look like. The conversation was spirited, informed, and deeply personal for many of the young people in the room.

With that foundation in place, participants picked up their supplies and got to work. Youth were invited to create original works of art inspired by Nelson Mandela’s life or by the broader themes of human rights and equality. The results were striking — each piece a reflection of what the afternoon’s learning had stirred in its creator. Works by Annalise, Aurora, Emery, Genevieve, Holden, Josephine, Kenzee, and others from the workshop are now featured on the TnUHR website, where they serve as a testament to what young people are capable of when given the knowledge, the tools, and the space to express it.

International Mandela Day is observed each year on July 18th, Nelson Mandela’s birthday, following its official recognition by the United Nations in 2009. The day calls on people around the world to devote 67 minutes of service to their communities — one minute for each year Mandela gave to the cause of social justice. TnUHR’s Mandela Day Youth Art Workshop is an extension of that call, channeling the spirit of service and education into a meaningful experience for Nashville’s next generation of human rights advocates.
