Study Ranks the Best States for Medicare Plans
Nevada and Delaware claim top spots in measures of affordability, quality, availability and popularity, according to new MedicareAdvantage.com study
FORT LEE, NJ, Oct. 1, 2020, ZEXPRWIRE, — Delaware and Nevada are tops in the U.S. for Medicare shopping, according to a study from MedicareAdvantage.com.
The study used data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to rank every state for the affordability, availability, quality and popularity of Medicare Advantage plans with prescription drug coverage (MAPD plans) and standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plans (PDP plans).
The purpose of the study was to identify the best states for Medicare consumers ahead of the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), also known as the fall Medicare Open Enrollment period, which takes place from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. During AEP, Medicare beneficiaries have the opportunity to purchase, switch or disenroll from Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plans.
“Medicare options can vary greatly from one state to the next,” said MedicareAdvantage.com senior writer, licensed insurance agent and study author Christian Worstell. “The results of this study provide a snapshot of where Medicare beneficiaries have the greatest access to the best and most affordable plans.”
Delaware ranked No. 1 overall for MAPD plans, while Nevada was rated the best state for PDP plans.
Other notable findings from the study include:
- Florida had the lowest weighted average premium for MAPD plans at $25.03 per month, while Wisconsin featured the lowest average PDP premiums at $29.79 per month.
- Massachusetts was found to have the highest quality MAPD plans, with 93% of the state’s plans having earned quality scores of four stars or higher from the CMS. Nevada had the highest number of top-rated PDP plans1.
- Arizona features the highest number of MAPD plans relative to its population. Delaware claimed the highest density of Part D plans for its respective population.
- Wyoming is the state where MAPD plans are most popular with residents, while Alaska is tops for Part D popularity.
